The Web Design Process

Why don't the links in my comps work?
During the design phase, you will be presented with comps. The comps are merely representations of what your website might look like if that design direction was taken. They are NOT actually web pages, but single graphic images. There are no rollovers, animation, working links, or other functionality. In addition, though we will try to present the comp as close to how the page would look once programmed, the way it is situated on the page may not be 100% accurate. This is a good point of discussion when the comps are delivered.

Web Hosting

Can I put my website on the homepage my ISP provides for me?
Perhaps. But you would not be able to have your own domain name. Also, you would be very limited in the technologies you would be able to utilize, and therefore you would be limited in the features you would be able to have on your site.

What is the difference between shared and dedicated hosting?
Websites are stored on a computer called a server. Shared hosting means that many sites are stored on a single server, and you are, in a sense, paying the hosting company 'rent' for your space within that server. Dedicated hosting means that your site is stored on its own computer. If your dedicated server is colocated, then the computer is actually housed at the hosting company's facilities. If it is managed hosting, that means the hosting company will take care of all the server administration.

Domain name registration... hosting... what am I paying for?
Domain name registration is when you secure the rights to use a specific web address, like www.YOURCOMPANY.com and it requires an annual fee to do so, though you can pay in advance for more years. Hosting is essentially 'rent' for space on a web server that stores the files for your site and makes them available 24/7. It is usually a monthly fee which can be paid monthly, quarterly, or annually. The rate depends on the technology used, the quality and speed of the server's connection to the web, and, most importantly, the customer service provided.
